7229 Elm Ridge Dr, Dallas, TX
This project started with a large, mostly open backyard and an existing covered patio. The goal was to transform that open space into a resort-style backyard that felt intentional and connected to the home while creating multiple areas for swimming, relaxing and entertaining.
The centerpiece is a large geometric pool featuring a substantial tanning ledge with in-water seating and a raised, glass-tile spa. Multiple elevations were incorporated throughout the design to give the backyard more dimension and create distinct spaces rather than having the pool simply sit in the middle of a large yard.
One of the most unique elements is the separate lower water feature, which is connected visually to the main pool by a raised glass-tile wall and waterfall. Stone-clad retaining and feature walls carry the same materials throughout the project and help tie the different elevations together.
Large-format light-colored decking surrounds the pool and extends back toward the home's existing covered patio, creating a natural transition between the house and pool area. Wide illuminated steps provide access between elevations and become an architectural feature of their own after dark.
The project also incorporates custom landscape beds, decorative rock, architectural planters and integrated landscape and step lighting. A separate fire feature provides another gathering area away from the water and gives the homeowners multiple ways to use the backyard throughout the year.
What makes this project stand out is the use of elevation, water and multiple gathering spaces. Instead of placing a pool in the existing lawn, the entire backyard was redesigned as one cohesive outdoor environment. The pool, raised spa, tanning ledge, waterfalls, landscaping, fire feature and existing covered patio all work together to create a backyard that feels like an extension of the home.
